Here is the story of season 1 of the anime
that inspired the game

During a boring stay at a summer camp, seven friends — Tai, Matt, Sora, Mimi, Joe, Izzy, and TK — discover small handheld devices called Digivices. Suddenly, they are caught up in a whirlpool and transported to the Digital World, where they encounter something very unusual: Digimon.

Tai quickly becomes friends with Agumon, and each of the others finds their own Digimon partner. The little Digimon are overjoyed, because with the help of their new friends they can evolve into more powerful forms (Digivolution), and will no longer be afraid to face the evil Digimon. They join the children, who in turn are looking for a way to get back home...

But before they can begin their journey, they learn that they did not end up here by accident — they are the DigiDestined, and their mission is to free the Digital World from the evil Digimon and bring peace, because the fate of the real world depends on the Digital World. Devimon will be only the first enemy to stop among many others, and the danger is very real. But our seven friends are determined to keep this world at peace.
